The 'Lungs of the Planet'
The boreal forest is often referred to as ‘the lungs of the planet’ in that trees convert hydrocarbons into oxygen, a necessary process to maintain human life on the planet. Millions of carbons, which are ozone depleting, are stored in boreal forests. Thousands of birds and animals live in these forests, as well as wetland dwelling creatures. The roots of trees, shrubs, flowers and grasses stop the rain and wind from blowing or washing away the soil. Forests are a necessity for the survival of all living things.
