The Alberta Government makes Money from its Natural Resources
The provincial governments are not only the stewards (care givers) of the land, they also own land and earn money by allowing companies to cut down trees and mine resources, like oil, from the land. Governments decide who can and cannot use the natural resources available in the province, including the water and resources, both above and below ground.
Governments are responsible for providing many services to the people of Canada like: national defense, roads, schools, health care, and transportation. Much of the money raised to pay for these services comes from taxes and money companies pay to remove natural resources from the earth, for building and development purposes.

Caring For the Environment
Toxic waste from mining oil sands is stored in tailings ponds. Before the oil company leaves the site, the tailings ponds are filled in with soil and replanted, so that the site can return to its natural habitat. The Alberta Government is proud of its land reclamation history.
